Soun Museum

The Soun Museum is located on the south side of Ashikaga Park. Tazaki Soun, a painter who was a loyal supporter of the emperor, lived in the Shimotsuke region in the 19th century, a period when the gears of time ground furiously at the dawn of the modern age. Soun was born in 1815 as the son of minor samurai serving the Toda clan in the Ashikaga domain, and studied painting from the time he was a child then later became a painter for the Toda clan. In the garden, Hakusekisanbo, where Soun live, where Soun lived, still remains, with a teahouse and atelier beside. The singing of small birds in the garden lets one forget the noise and activity of the town.
