Ashikaga Park was established in 1883, and is a 4.5ha park located on the southern end of the hilly region to the west of the city center. There are 10 ancient tombs in the park, and the park is famous for being the site of the first excavation of such within Japan in 1886. The park is famous as a spot for cherry blossoms and azaleas, and is a popular spot for hanami cherry blossom viewing for its cherry blossoms, the Watarasegawa River and the sight of the far off mountain range.
