Emperor Shomu ordered construction of provincial temples throughout Japan in the year 741 during the Nara Period in order to calm political troubles and deal with epidemics and protect the peace of the country through the power of Buddhism.The Shimotsuke Provinvial Temple was one of 60 built throughout the country.Ruins of several of the halls and towers still stand within the temple grounds, conveying the conditions of the past to the modern day.
