The Shimotsuke Yakushiji Temple Ruins are a government designated historical site. It is said the original Shimotsuke Yakushiji Temple was built in the latter half of the 7th century in the time of Emperor Tenno. The temple grounds were expansive at approximately 250m east to west and 350m north to south enclosed by a tile-topped earthen wall and the grand and stately appearance made it truly in both name and reality the greatest temple eastern Japan. At present traces of its original appearance can only be seen in a portion of the Rokkaku-do hall of the Ankokuji Temple. The site also houses the "Shimotsuke Yakushiji Temple Historical Center which displays unearthed original tiles and other items and one portion of one of the corridors has been restored.
