The Oya Kannon located at the Oyaji Temple which is said to have been established by Kobo Daishi in the year 810.Entering the main hall which is enclosed in a cave one is greeted by the 1000 armed Oya Kannon goddess of mercy statue which is carved out of the oyaishi rock face which is thought to be the oldest stone cavern Buddha in Japan and stands at 4m in height.The Oyaji Temple Oya Kannon is one of 10 "magai butsu" Buddhist images designated as a National Special Historic Spot and Important Cultural Asset.
