Mt. Mikamoyama which stands over Sano City and the town of Iwafune is located approximately 5km from the Tohoku Expressway Sano-Fujioka Interchange. "Shimotsuke no mikamo no yama no konara no su maguhashikoro ha tagake ka motamu" (Who will marry the maid, beautiful like the nara oak trees that grow on Mt. Mikamoyama) This is a poem from the Manyreiheishi "Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves", the oldest Waka poem anthology in Japan from nearly 1250 years in the past. The poem wonders who the girl, who is as beautiful as Mt. Mikamoyama, will marry, showing that the beauty of Mt. Mikamoyama was appreciated by many people, even since ancient times.
