Ryuokyo is a ravine located between Kinugawa Onsen and Kawaji Onsen. Volcanic rock ejected by submarine volcanoes approximately 22,000,000 years ago was eroded away by the flow of the Kinugawa River creating the scenery of the ravine today. As implied by the name Ryuoukyo, or “dragon king ravine”, the intense scenery of the ravine along the riverbanks brings to mind the image of a writhing dragon, and visitors can enjoy the beauty of the ravine through the four seasons from the natural walking path alongside the river.
