Chausudake is the highest peak of the 1915m elevation Nasu Volcanic Zone. It is currently the only active volcano zone in Tochigi Prefecture, with plumes of smoke and gushing hot springs. Visitors can ascend to the 9th stage on the ropeway that runs from spring to fall. If one climbs the trekking course 45 minutes from there, one will reach the peak of the mountain with a 360 degree view where one can see as far away as the Nikko Mountain Range. The sight of the smoke lingering in the air and changing beautifully through the 4 seasons is the symbol of Nasu Kogen.
