The Tochigi Kuranomachi Museum of Art building itself is an important cultural asset representative of "Kuranomachi (Warehouse District) Tochigi". The building is a renovated stone warehouse that was built approximately 200 years ago lending the structure a distinguished air, and it is known as the "Otasuke Kura" (helpful warehouse) of the Yoshino Family who tried to help alleviate the poverty of the people during the Edo Period. On display is a large collection of art, ceramic and written works by famous artists and artists connected to Tochigi City.
