Ose Kanko Yana is Tochigi's largest weir.A yana, the Japanese word for "weir," is an uncommon way to catch fish. Its design takes advantage of the ayu's habit of heading downstream to lay eggs by setting up a ramp made of bamboo up which the fish swim and get caught as they attempt to head back upstream.Nothing beats grasping an ayu in your bare hands in summer. Voices shout out to welcome the ayu as they leap recklessly up the ramp. The taste of freshly caught ayu salted and roasted over a charcoal fire brings an aromatic and thoroughly pleasing sensation to one's taste buds.Help yourself to fried ayu, ayumeshi (ayu on rice), dengaku (ayu baked and coated with miso) or even some eel, another catch you can make at the yana.
