The Nikko Toshogu Shrine enshrines Tosho Daigongen which is the deified Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate. The Yomeimon Gate inside the main shrine area in particular is well known and extremely beautiful. The over 500 carvings on the gate can be viewed for a full day and never become boring, so much so that it is often called the "Higurashinomon" or "Sunset Gate". The shrine also has an art museum and treasure room as well as a number of other sights making it a world-class tourism spot.
