Nikkosan Rinnouji Temple is located on the south side of Toshogu. Rinnoji Temple is said to have been founded by the Nara Period monk Shodo Shonin. The name Rinnoji is a collective name for a group of temples in the Nikko Mountains whose doto buildings spread over a large area. The temple holds a large number of national treasures and Important Cultural Assets, and also has a number of ancient buildings such as the Taiyuin and the main hall's sanbutsudo. The interior of the temple grounds has been specified as a National Historic Site and the temple is also registered as a World Heritage Site as one of Nikko's temples and shrines.
