Rinnoji Taiyuin is located on the west of Toshogu next to Futarasan-Jinja Shrine. The Taiyuin was built in a more somber style than Toshogu according to the last will and testament of the third Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu, who died in Edo Castle in 1651. However the gongenzukuri style buildings which were styled after the main hall of Toshogu used a magnificent undertone of black and gold representative of the early Edo period and these important buildings where highly praised with the haiden, ai no ma and honden main hall being designated as national treasures.
