Watarase Retarding Basin

Watarase Retarding Basin is the largest retarding basin in Japan with a total area of approximately 3,300ha and spans across the 4 prefectures of Tochigi, Ibaraki, Saitama and Gunma. At the southern end, the giant heart shaped Lake Yanaka sits calmly collecting water. In addition to being able to enjoy wind surfing, canoeing, yachting and other water sports as well as cycling and fishing, the area is also popular as a bird watching spot for its nearly 260 verified species of birds as well as the falcons which reside in the area all year round, even through the winter.
