The region that Omiwa Jinja Shrine is located in is called the Ko region and is where the government of ancient Shimotsuke (Shimotsuke is the old name for the Tochigi Prefecture region) was located there, and the ruins of the Shimotsuke Government Building still remain nearby. Omiwa Jinja Shrine is said to have been built nearly 1800 years ago by the 10 imperial crown prince.
