Reiheishi Highway
Nikko Cedar Avenue

There are over 12,500 cedar trees along the Nikko Kaido, Reiheishi Kaido and Aizunishi Kaido highways for a total length of 37km. Noted in the Guinness Book of World Records and the longest tree lined road in the world, the roads have nearly 400 years of history since their planting. The road is a very precious cultural asset which is the only one in Japan to have 2 separate designations as a Special Historic Spot and Special Natural Treasure. The cedar avenue was planted by Matsudaira Masatsuna, a vassal of Tokugawa Ieyasu for the Nikko Toshogu Shrine, and the planting was a massive project taking nearly 20 years to complete starting around 1625. It is thought that cedar were selected by Masatsuna to match the approach to the Nikko Toshogu Shrine.
